This beautifully structured Maranges Rouge offers layers of ripe red cherry, wild strawberry, and a touch of black pepper. Silky tannins and bright acidity provide freshness, while subtle notes of forest floor and spice add complexity. The finish is long and refined, with a mineral edge that speaks of its Burgundian origins.
Pablo and Vincent took over from their parents in 2007 after gaining experience in Bordeaux and Central Otago. They farm the 19-hectare estate organically and have introduced horse-drawn ploughing and larger barrels to refine the style of the wines, which has helped raise the domaine's profile. Situated just 10 kilometres from Puligny and Chassagne Montrachet, at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune, Maranges is gaining attention for the quality and affordability of its wines. The village is in the Saône-et-Loire department, something you notice as the vegetation and houses change as you drive towards the village. Domaine Chevrot is nestled in the heart of the appellation and is widely viewed as one of the leading producers.
The ‘Sur le Chêne' vineyard is situated on well-drained, limestone-rich soils, benefitting from excellent sun exposure. The vines are carefully tended using organic practices, with horse ploughing and natural cover crops maintaining biodiversity. Low yields ensure concentration and purity in every bottle.
Hand-harvested grapes undergo a meticulous sorting process before a gentle, whole-bunch fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Gentle extraction techniques preserve elegance and finesse, followed by maturation in French oak barrels (a small proportion new) to add depth without overpowering the delicate fruit character. The wine is bottled unfiltered to retain its natural expression.
A fantastic match for roast duck with cherry sauce, where the wine's bright fruit and acidity complement the dish's richness. Also pairs beautifully with wild mushroom risotto, enhancing the earthy depth of both the wine and the dish.
